Ongoing Global Avoidable Mortality Holocaust and Horrendous Human Carnage from War and Hegemony

Dr Gideon Polya

Lucky Westerners living in rich, prosperous and peaceful countries have minimal direct exposure to death. In their circa 80-year life-span they would see only about 10 dead bodies, typically those of dead relatives dying natural deaths from old age or terminal illness and encountered in hospitals or open-coffin funerals. However, Westerners are fed a huge daily diet of fictional deadly violence via movies and television, and the nightly news brings them graphic reports of actual deadly violence within their own town, city or national jurisdiction, and of mass deaths around the world from events such as avalanches, air crashes, massacres or military operations. A typical news day in a nice, rich and peaceful place like Australia (population 25 million) might involve on average about 1 murder and 6 accidental deaths, with the daily average of about 7 suicides not being reported for fear of encouraging more. A really bad news day might involve 100 people dying from an air crash, train wreck, boat capsize, bus collision, massacre or a so-called “natural disaster” somewhere else in the world.

“Oh, the humanity!” the good Westerners cry. However, their angst is minimized by Mainstream media non-reportage of the actual daily carnage of the Global Avoidable Mortality Holocaust in which 44,000 people in the Developing World (minus China) die avoidably from deprivation each day on Spaceship Earth with homicidally greedy, neoliberal One Percenters in charge of the flight deck and about half the victims being children. Whether a child dies non-violently from war- or hegemony-imposed deprivation or dies violently from bashing, bullets or bombs, the death is just as final and irreversible and the agent’s culpability the same.

Avoidable mortality (avoidable death, excess mortality, excess death, premature death, untimely death, deaths that should not have happened) can be defined as the difference between the actual mortality in a country and the mortality expected for a peaceful, decently governed country. For poor but peaceful high birth-rate countries, the average death rate is about 4 deaths per thousand of population per year, and accordingly the avoidable mortality rate can be readily determined as actual death rate minus 4. For other countries, estimation of the avoidable death rate is more complicated and is described in my book Body Count. Avoidable mortality since 1950 that is now available for free perusal on the web [1]. Detailed demographic data from 1950 onwards (e.g. death rate, under-5 infant death rate, etc.) are available from the UN Population Division [2]. For poor, high birth rate countries the annual avoidable mortality can be simply estimated as 1.4 times the under-5 infant deaths (the latter data being readily available on-line from the UN Population Division [2]).

Intra-nationally, avoidable mortality is a crucial parameter for assessing the bottom-line decency and efficacy of social policies within a country. However, avoidable mortality is also a key parameter in assessing the human consequences of war, occupation and neo-colonial hegemony. One can readily see why bad and evil governments are unwilling to be called to account for intra-national deficiencies causing avoidable deaths from deprivation, and why evil, war-making governments are unwilling to be called to account for the huge violent deaths and avoidable deaths from deprivation associated with invading, devastating and occupying other countries. Thus, while avoidable mortality and its synonyms are fundamental to medical epidemiology (e.g. avoidable deaths associated with smoking), avoidable mortality is scrupulously (or rather unscrupulously) avoided in Mainstream discussion of the merits or otherwise of social policies within a country (e.g. gross race-based inequity in the US) or the consequences of war, invasion, devastation and occupation of foreign countries (e.g. the horrendous avoidable mortality in 20 countries invaded by the US Alliance in the 21st century US War on Terror).

The deaths of a very large number of people is described as a “holocaust.” Indeed the first WW2 atrocity to be described as a “holocaust” (by N.G. Jog in 1944 [3]) was the Bengali Holocaust (WW2 Indian Holocaust, WW2 Bengal Famine), the WW2 atrocity in which the British with Australian complicity deliberately starved 6-7 million Indians to death in Bengal and the adjacent province of Orissa, Assam and Bihar [4-6]. Yet this atrocity has become a “forgotten holocaust” that has been largely white-washed out of general public perception in the Anglosphere by several generations of holocaust-ignoring and holocaust-denying journalists, politicians, commentariats and academics. Indeed since the 1967 Israeli conquest of all of Palestine, acquisition of nuclear weapons and assumption of massive influence in the Anglosphere (notably in the US), Zionists and their supporters have ensured that the very term “holocaust” only applies to the WW2 Jewish Holocaust that is commonly referred to as “the Holocaust.” Reality check: the Jewish Holocaust (5-6 million Jews killed by violence or deprivation) was part of the WW2 European Holocaust (30 million Slavs, Jews and Gypsies killed by the Nazis) that was part of a global WW2 Holocaust that also included the 1937-1945 Chinese Holocaust (35 million Chinese killed under the Japanese) and the 1942-1945 Bengali Holocaust (6-7 million Indians killed under the British).

While a “holocaust” refers to the deaths of huge numbers of people, “genocide” is defined by Article 2 of the UN Genocide Convention as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group [7].” The term “genocide” clearly applies to the various elements of the WW2 Holocaust and to prior and subsequent mass murder atrocities. Thus, the ongoing Australian Aboriginal Genocide has been associated since British invasion in 1788 with about 2 million Indigenous Australians deaths from violence (0.1 million) or from imposed disease and deprivation – presently about 4,000 Australian Aboriginals die avoidably each year from imposed deprivation in one of the world’s richest countries [8]. The ongoing Palestinian Genocide has been associated with ethnic cleansing of 90% of Palestine and about 2.3 million deaths from violence (0.1 million) or deprivation (2.2 million) since the British invasion of Palestine in WW1 [9].

In the de-colonizing post-WW2 era, Westerners have progressively adopted an anti-racist stance. Thus, it is no longer acceptable in the West to refer to people of colour by derogatory terms or to exclude them from hotels or restaurants. Indeed in my own country, Australia, we finally voted to count Indigenous Australians as citizens in 1967, the reformist Whitlam Labor Government abolished the 1901-1974 White Australia Policy in 1974, and in 1975 (just before it was removed in a CIA-backed Coup) it passed the 1975 Racial Discrimination Act that criminalized racial discrimination in the Federal jurisdiction. However, the Western Mainstream media hides the awful reality that this earnest Western anti-racism is a veneer hiding what must be called politically correct racism (PC racism). Thus, decolonization was associated with continued poverty of formerly subject peoples that was worsened by Western hegemony, transfers to violent US hegemony and global post-1950 avoidable deaths from deprivation totalling 1,500 million [1].

The penultimate in racism is invasion of another country and the ultimate in racism is genocide. Conservative Westerners who have supported post-WW2 US wars are PC racist – they earnestly declare that they are not racist but nevertheless support racist wars that have killed millions. Thus, most Australians will vehemently declare that they are not racists but Australia has nevertheless been complicit in all post-1950 US Asian wars, atrocities that have been associated with 40 million Asian deaths from violence or war-imposed deprivation [1]. Old habits die hard, and the serial invaders (state terrorist serial killers) of the 21st century are the presently US-allied Western countries with an appalling record of invading other countries. Thus, the British have invaded 193 countries, Australia 85, France 82, the US 72 (52 after WW2), Germany 39, Japan 30, Russia 25, Canada 25, Apartheid Israel 12, China 2 and North Korea arguably none [10, 11].

The bloody 20th century concluded with Western imposition of deadly sanctions on Iraq (1990-2003) [12, 13]. It is estimated that 1.7 million Iraqis (about half of them children) died avoidably from deprivation under sanctions and US, UK and Israeli bombing that reduced a well-educated, modern, secular state to destitution. Top UN officials resigned over what they called a UN-sanctioned Iraqi Genocide. Indeed the US Government confessed to the enormity of this crime. Thus, in 1996 when anti-racist Jewish American journalist Lesley Stahl famously asked US UN Ambassador Madeleine Albright “We have heard that half a million [Iraqi] children have died. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?” Albright replied, “We think the price is worth it [12].”

Decent people hoped that the 21st century would be Humanity’s first century of peace for thousands of years. It was not to be thanks to the endlessly invading Americans, British, French, Israelis, Australians and NATO US lackeys. No Iraqis or Afghans were directly involved in the 9-11 atrocity on 11 September, 2001, according to the “official version of 9-11,” promulgated by the Bush Administration that told 935 lies about Iraq between 9-11 and the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 [14]. Notwithstanding this “technicality,” the endlessly mendacious, serial invader Americans used 9-11 (3,000 dead) as an excuse to invade and devastate Afghanistan and Iraq and 18 other Muslim countries [12, 13]. Conservative Alan Greenspan (long-time chairman of the US Federal reserve) confessed that “The Iraq war is largely about oil” and on the Left, Professor Noam Chomsky (from 101-Nobel-Laureate Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT) declared the obvious that US Middle East wars were about oil and US hegemony [12].

Successive genocidally racist American Governments have not been bothered by the millions they have killed. Thus, General Tommy Franks boasted that “We don’t do body counts.” However, world-leading US medical epidemiologist and a world-leading UK polling organization, ORB, have informed the eminent US Just Foreign Policy organization to estimate 1.5 million Iraqi deaths from violence in the period 2003-2011. To this we must add a further 1.2 million Iraqi avoidable deaths from war-imposed deprivation under US occupation. Thus, Iraq deaths from violence or imposed deprivation total 2.7 million for the period 2003-2011 (one notes that the Australian ABC, the Australian equivalent of the UK BBC, estimated in 2011 that “tens of thousands” of Iraqis had been killed). However, it gets worse when we consider the 0.2 million Iraqis killed in the Gulf War and the 1.7 million Iraqis dying avoidably from deprivation under Sanctions. The 1990-2011 Iraqi Holocaust and Iraqi Genocide has been associated with 4.6 million Iraq deaths from violence, 1.7 million, or from imposed deprivation, 2.9 million, carnage approaching that of the WW2 Jewish Holocaust. It gets worse still – Iraqi deaths from violence or imposed deprivation total 9 million since the 1914 British invasion of Iraq in WW1 [12, 13].

In 1978, Afghanistan was facing a good future under a progressive and secular government. However, the US engineered the overthrow of this secular government and thence backed fundamentalist jihadis in the decade-long war after the Russians invaded. Afghanistan had a brief respite when the Taliban won the civil war after the Russians left. However, in 2001 the US used the 9-11 atrocity as an excuse to invade Afghanistan, although no Afghans were involved in 9-11 according to the ”official version” of 9-11. Indeed US-installed Afghan president Hamid Karzai has denied the very existence of Al Qaeda jihadis in Afghanistan and declared himself to be agnostic over the “official version of 9-11” [14].

It is hard to assess violent deaths in the Afghan War because the war criminal Americans “don’t do body counts.” Indeed some Australians soldiers in Afghanistan got their wrists slapped for bringing back severed Taliban hands as evidence of their operational success. However, expert US-linked Australian military advice is that the Iraq War was 4 times more deadly that the Afghan War. This estimate permitted an estimate of the Afghan War in 2001-2014 being associated with 7.2 million Afghan deaths from violence, 1.7 million, or from war-imposed deprivation, 5.5 million – an Afghan Holocaust and Afghan Genocide as defined by Article 2 of the UN Genocide Convention. Indeed it has been argued by Professor Ali Khan (professor of law, Washburn University School of Law, Topeka, Kansas) that the US Alliance operations to exterminate the Taliban, the widely-supported Indigenous Afghan religious group, amount to genocide as “acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group [14].”

It gets worse. The post-9-11 US War on Terror is in awful reality a US War on Muslims that has been associated with 32 million Muslim deaths from violence, 5 million, or from deprivation, 27 million, since the 9-11 atrocity that numerous science, architecture, engineering, aviation, military and intelligence experts regard as a US Government false flag atrocity that very likely involved Apartheid Israelis as well as Zionist American Government agents [15, 16]. Indeed both Republican President Donald Trump and Democrat Vice-President Al Gore have slammed the Bush Administration for failure to act before 9-11 when, according to CIA director George Tenet, the entire warning system was “blinking red [16].” The carnage of the post-9-11 US War on Muslims is similar to that of the WW2 European Holocaust and the WW2 Chinese Holocaust – a Muslim Holocaust and a Muslim Genocide as defined by Article 2 of the UN Genocide Convention.

Where is justice in this? Mainstream media journalists, editors, politicians, commentariats and academics ignore the horrendous reality of the Korean Genocide (28% of the North Korean population was killed by US bombing), the ongoing Australian Aboriginal Genocide, the ongoing Palestinian Genocide, the Iraqi Genocide and Iraqi Holocaust, the Afghan Genocide and Afghan Holocaust, and the ongoing Muslim Holocaust and Muslim Genocide in 20 countries variously subject to US Alliance violence. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has a very poor record of confining prosecutable war crimes to Serbs and non-Europeans that the US doesn’t like. However, even in the eventuality of the ICC speeding up its current “glacial” action on war crimes and including those of the war criminal US Alliance, the US will not cooperate and will reject the authority of the ICC.

The US Alliance is not merely violating the UN Genocide Convention in its ongoing War on Muslims. The US Alliance is also grossly violating Articles 55 and 56 of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War that unequivocally demand that an Occupier must provide its conquered Subjects with life-sustaining food and medical requisites “to the fullest extent of the means available to it [17].” Thus, the infant mortality (under-1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births) is 12 (China), 16 (Tibet), 6 (USA) and 111 (US Alliance- and Australia-occupied Afghanistan). Similarly, the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) (maternal deaths per 100,000 live births) is 20-27 (China), 100 (Tibet), 14 (USA) and 400-1,200 (US Alliance- and Australia-occupied Afghanistan) [18]. China with an annual per capita GDP of merely $8,126 (as compared to America’s $56,054 and Australia’s $51,352) has obtained an infant mortality in the Tibet Autonomous Region that is 7 times lower than that in Occupied Afghanistan and a Maternal Mortality in Tibet that is 4-12 times lower than that in US- and Australia-occupied Afghanistan [18].

As of 2017, failure of the US Alliance to observe the unequivocal demands of the Geneva Convention results in the avoidable death of under-1 Afghan infants totalling 121,328 each year or 40 times the carnage in the US Government’s 9-11 false flag atrocity. Over the 16 years of the Afghan War this US Alliance mass murder of infants amounts to the death of 16 years x 121,328 deaths per year = 1.9 million under-1 year old Afghan infant deaths. Similarly, the MMR of 400-1,200 for US Alliance-occupied Afghanistan means that (400-1,200) x 11.55 = 4,620-13,860 Afghan women suffer maternal mortality each year as compared to 14 x 11.55 = 162 if the US Alliance observed the Geneva Convention. Thus, the failure of the US Alliance to observe the Geneva Convention kills 4,458- 13,698 Afghan women each year. The Afghan maternal mortality due to US Alliance war crimes over the 16 years of the Afghan War is accordingly 71,000-219,000 [18].

The US Alliance war criminals and serial killers must be hauled before the International Criminal Court – but as they say, “pigs may fly.” However, there should surely be a major domestic political price to pay in two key areas for war criminal warmongers and state terrorism serial killers in US Alliance countries as set out below:

(1) Utterly ignored by Western Mainstream media are the 1.2 million people who have died world-wide since 9-11 due to US Alliance restoration of the Taliban-destroyed Afghan opium industry from 6% of world market share in 2001 to 93% in 2007, the breakdown (as of 2015) including 280,000 Americans, 256,000 Indonesians, 68,000 Iranians, 25,000 British, 14,000 Canadians, 10,000 Germans, and 5,000 Australians. Successive US presidents have been among the biggest opiate drug pushers in the world after Queen Victoria. So much for the War on Drugs that is trumped by the War on Muslims [14].
(2). Also utterly ignored by US Mainstream media is the estimate that about 1.7 million Americans die preventably each year in America from all kinds of “life-style” or “socio-political choice” reasons, the breakdown including (1) smoking (443,000), (2) adverse hospital events (440,000), (3) obesity ( 300,000), (4) air pollution (200,000), (5) alcohol (75,000), (6) lack of medical insurance (45,000), (7) illicit drugs (38,000) , (8) vehicle crashes (33,000), (9) guns (31,000), (10) suicide (30,000, 7,000 being US veterans), (11) avoidable under-5 year old US infant deaths (21,000), (12) homicide (15,000), and (13) jihadi terrorism (4) [19]. Since 9-11 about 29 million Americans have died preventably from “life-style” or “socio-political choice” reasons but only about 60 Americans have been killed in America since 9-11 by jihadi psychopaths. The long term accrual cost of the US War on Terror is estimated as $6 trillion. Successive US Governments have been involved in the horrendous fiscal perversion of committing $6 trillion to killing 32 million Muslims abroad instead of trying to save the lives of 29 million Americans at home.
Of course the passive and active mass murder of 32 million Muslims since 9-11 by the US Alliance is dwarfed by the 17 years x 16 million avoidable deaths per year = 272 million global avoidable deaths from deprivation over the same period that are attributable to the One Percenter-dominated world economic order. The One Percenters own 50% of the world’s wealth and this gross inequity is bad for economics (the poor cannot afford the goods and services they produce) and is bad for democracy (Big Money buys votes). Thus, the Western democracies have become Kleptocracies, Plutocracies, Murdochracies, Lobbyocracies, Corporatocracies and Dollarocracies in which Big Money purchases people, parties, policies, public perception of reality, votes, more political power and more private profit. French economist Thomas Piketty has proposed an annual wealth tax approach to solving this deadly inequity [20], and indeed France has such a tax that rises to 1% and the Muslim world has had an annual wealth tax (zakkat) of 2.5% for about 1,400 years. It is estimated that an annual wealth tax of 4% could bring every country up to the per capita GDP of $8,000 enjoyed by China and Cuba (well-governed countries for which annual avoidable mortality is zero (0) [1]) and hence abolish the Global Avoidable Mortality Holocaust in which 16 million people presently die from deprivation each year [1, 21, 22].
